Environmentalist or Conservationist?
Environmentalism
Advocacy of the preservation or improvement of the natural environment, especially the social and political movement to control environmental pollution. Other specific goals of environmentalism include control of human population growth, conservation of natural resources, restriction of the negative effects of modern technology, and the adoption of environmentally benign forms of political and economic organization. The term refers to any theory that emphasizes the importance of environmental factors in the development of culture and society.
Environmentalist
An advocate of environmentalism: one concerned about environmental quality especially of the human environment with respect to the control of pollution.
Conservationism not a word in Webster
Conservation
A careful preservation and protection of something; the preservation of a physical quantity.
Conservationist
A person who is involved in conservation; a person who advocates conservation especially of natural resources.
* Definitions taken from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
It occurs that an environmentalist can be a conservationist but that a conservationist is not necessarily an environmentalist. Environmental advocacy will not hesitate to crush human liberty in pursuit of goals. The fact that conservation is not an “ism” speaks volumes.
March 24, 1989, Exxon Valdez Spill
A poem written shortly after the Exon Valdez spill caused me to question myself many times since. What was I at the time I wrote it and what am I now? My politics where decidedly conservative by the time this was written, was my core progressive? The thought has haunted me since and caused deep introspection. One should require of oneself a thorough understanding of the driving force in one’s life. The question raised by this scribbling leads me to study the writing of great Western thinkers who, in deep background, shape our world. I conclude that at my core rests a sovereign dedicated to liberty and just governance. I believe it has been and will remain ever so and I celebrate “the poem” for prodding me to explore the landscape of my sole.

(A Plea For Light Impact Living)
They oiled an eagle for me today.
Its wings were stilled so I might play.
But, you say , I live far away
From field and beach and White Tail's lay.
The items that sustain me there,
Require oil to make them fare.
Then I'm the one I rage against,
A danger to its countenance.
If I'm to save the wilderness,
I must tread lightly outside the fence.
For I'm the problem you see,
Yes, I am they and they are me!
